Close Decision in UFC 105 Light Heavy Division
UFC 105 Couture vs Vera
On Saturday, November 14, 2009, UFC 105 aired free on Spike TV via tape delay. The main event of the night was between Randy Couture and Brandon Vera along with a host of other English UFC Fighters.
Randy Couture did show that even at 46 years old he can battle against one of the light heavyweights up and coming mma fighters.
He was able to absorb some very hard hitting body shots and some jarring blows to the face and head. Randy "The Natural" Couture was able to defeat Brandon Vera in a somewhat controversial unanimous decision during UFC 105's light heavyweight main event.
This somewhat unpopular unanimous decision wrapped up a eventful mma event in Manchester, England's MEN Arena. UFC 105 was the last overseas show of 2009 and sold out to a crowd of 16,693 MMA fans. UFC 105 had many headlining mixed martial arts fight, along with the unveiling of Ulitmate Fighting Championship's next welterweight title challenger.
"Below is an almost 10 minute promo of the UFC 105, I included it because it really showcases the different fighters of the night and may help some of the statics below more real if you weren't able to watch the mma fights, while helping you relive them if you did." -Kuma
While the Couture vs Vera mma match up was not the original line up for the UFC 105's main event, it did prove to add some excitement to the other mma match up's of the night.
Thse two mma warriors has recently fought in UFC 102 on August 29, though neither showed any lack due to the shorter than usual training camps.
Randy Couture did have some difficulty getting the fight to the mat. He did however work the clinch up against the cage wearing down Vera a bit.
In the slow starting 2nd round Brandon kneed Randy Couture sending him down to the mat. The seasoned veteran Couture was able to summons the warrior spirit from within and survived the round despite the hard hitting blow from Vera.
In the third and most disputed round Brandon Vera defended several takedowns, while delivering several kicks to the body and taking Couture to the mat just as the bell sounded.
"The Natural's" was able close distance and effectively employ some dirty boxing techniques during clinches throughout the match. Which may have won him the fight in the eyes of the judges.
It was a close fight much like the one between Machida and Shogun
a few weeks back and just as in that mma match, my favorite won. Although, I am not convinced it was the right person.
There were several other good mma fights through out the night.
For instance, Michael Bisping came from behind and knockout out veteran mma middleweight Denis Kang. After the match Bisping said..
"You have no idea how I felt after that last fight," Bisping said. "This is my life, and I've devoted everything to it. ... (I'm) sorry to all my fans about the last fight. It's going to be going back to the old Michael Bisping, the one you saw tonight."
Welterweight James Wilks was matched up against mixed martial arts veteran Matt Brown. Brown defeated Wilks via tko after some ground battling. Brown had recently lost his father due to leukemia, which is something I can relate to after losing my Mom recently to CHF. Brown remained humble in victory..
"Man, I still have a lot to work on," he said.
