On Wednesday, December 29, 2010, during a press conference for UFC 125, Chuck Liddell announced his retirement as a mixed martial arts fighter.
I can remember when this MMA warrior and former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion was the number one attraction for the UFC and some would argue that Chuck Liddell was perhaps the number one MMA fighter in the sport of mixed martial arts.
But Chuck has had a tough time lately losing five of his last six MMA fights and several devastating KO's and TKO's. This may very well have been what prompted Chuck 'The Iceman' Liddell to announce his retirement at the UFC 125 press conference.
During the press conference, UFC President Dana White hinted to the fact that Chuck Liddell would be stepping down as an MMA fighter and would take a position as the new UFC executive vice president of business development.
This is what 'The Iceman' had to say..
"I want to thank Frank, Lorenzo and Dana for everything they've done for me over the years and for the sport. Most of all, I want to thank my fans, my family, I love this sport and I'm excited going into a new stage in my life and keep promoting the best sport in the world and the sport I love. They're giving me the opportunity again to keep promoting and keep doing stuff now that I'm retired."
Chuck Liddell is a true warrior and a great mixed martial artist. While he will be missed in the ring, I am certian the sport of MMA will benifit from the knowledge and experience he will bring to the front office of the UFC.
The warriors journey is every changing and we at the Martial Art Hall of Warrior Training wish him a Good journey in all his new endeavors.
